Mama Stitch: Stories, Music, Toast.
Like threads of yarn woven through a needle, stitching us together, our mother’s advice, her stories
and memories shape us as we curve, bend and braid, finding our place in the world.
Using headphone verbatim, music and storytelling, Whiskey & Boots invites audiences to listen and reflect on their maternal line. Stories about Mums will be collected by Whiskey & Boots from individuals in Narrogin, which are then distilled and presented as Headphone Verbatim Performance (a performance style involving actors wearing headphones and delivering the recorded interview as they hear it, live and without embellishment).
Each story is underscored with an original, bespoke musical response that has been inspired by the stories shared. Performed over two nights, Mama Stitch offers a unique insight into the Community of Narrogin, through the personal lens of families.
Upon arrival, audiences enjoy a hot cup of tea and freshly baked toast with homemade jam, while listening to the reflections of people from their community, sharing their stories about their Mums. They are then invited to contribute to the project by writing an anonymous “Dear Mum” letter, which is later displayed in the space and in subsequent performances. Mama Stitch is a project unique to each place in which it’s created – part performance, part installation – celebrating mothers within a community, in all their variations.

WHISKEY & BOOTS
Whiskey & Boots is a Perth-based performance company. We make Headphone Verbatim Performance work that examines the challenges and contradictions of the human condition. Using storytelling and music, we take real stories gathered from selected communities and share them publicly, illuminating shared and unique experiences, universal challenges and secret fears, reminding audiences of what it means to be human; the complex, ugly, beautiful, brave, funny, flawed and vulnerable aspects of life we all share. Our work is low-fi, stripped back and welcoming, the fourth wall doesn’t exist. Through the sharing of honest moments in intimate spaces we can try to understand each other better, boldly, honestly, playfully.
