We Three Explore the Forest Floor

What lies beneath our feet?
The forest floor is a complex and interconnected world – a network of fungi, lichens, insects, animals, leaf litter, earth and wildflowers that plays an essential role in supporting life in the Australian bush.
In We Three Explore the Forest Floor, artists Joyce Contos, Peter Denton and Dianne Strahan turn their attention to this often-overlooked world, exploring its textures, colours and interconnectedness through a diverse range of art forms.
Working across oils, acrylics, watercolour, monoprint, earth pigments, eco-printing and stitch, the artists experiment with traditional materials and techniques, incorporating inspiration and materials from the natural environment. Their work considers the connections between nature and people, while celebrating the joy of art making, experimentation and creative collaboration.
The artists are mindful of their impact on the environment and source much of their natural material from their own native gardens, including leaf litter and earth pigments.
About We Three
Joyce, Peter and Di first came together in 2021 through their shared love of nature. Although each artist works across different mediums, they were drawn to the possibilities of combining and expanding their practices through collaboration.
This is the third iteration of We Three, following We Three and Trees in 2022 and We Three Again in Rocky Terrain in 2024.
Now, they invite us to look closer at the world beneath our feet.
Join us for the exhibition opening on Saturday 12 September to meet the artists and hear more about their work, creative process and fascination with the natural environment.
