Join us in the gallery for an informal afternoon with Great Southern artists Linda Chambers and Collyn Gawned. Enjoy a cuppa, light afternoon tea, and a walk-through of the exhibition as the artists share the stories and ideas behind their work.

This interactive artist talk will also include additional pieces brought along by the artists to handle and explore up close.

About the Exhibition

Previously exhibited at the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany, 100 Chawan is a pilgrimage through clay — seeking the purity of simple pottery making that can be used in everyday life, inspired by traditional Japanese ceramics.

A pilgrimage is a journey, often into an unknown or unfamiliar place, where one goes in search of expanded meaning — of self, others, nature, or a higher good. It can lead to personal transformation, after which one returns to daily life.

The 100 chawan (tea bowls) form the foundation of the exhibition. Each bowl varies in size, construction and decoration, reflecting the unique qualities that emerge through the making process.

Also included are works connected to Japanese household ceramics and culture, alongside textile pieces made from natural fibres and hand dyed with plant dyes (including tea). These works draw inspiration from Korean and Japanese textile traditions and are stitched with silk or cotton thread.

A specially commissioned soundscape by artist Nat Rad accompanies the exhibition, enhancing the atmosphere of contemplation and ritual within the gallery.

Together, Linda and Collyn share a deep interest in culture, craft and the process of making with clay. Through their work they seek to capture something humble, unique and quietly special in each individual piece.
